Description
In 1946, the council proposed that they buy a portion of Gable House Field from Canon William Orme Assheton, a former rector of the parish. However, Canon Assheton freely gave the land to Rugby Corporation instead, as thanksgiving for deliverance from their enemies during the Second World War. The 1.78 acres (0.7 hectares) piece of land, known as Assheton Recreation Ground after its charitable donor, was therefore presented for development as an open space, garden and children's play area. More recently, in July 2005, Rugby Borough Council completed a £55,000 project to build a play area on Assheton Recreation Ground. Local children, schools and parents were asked what equipment they would like to see in the area. Children from Bilton Infant School were fundamental to the development, when they helped select the type and colour of equipment, they were also asked to design their own play area. Those with the best designs opened the play area with the former Mayor Councillor Richard Lane.
Dogs must be put on a lead when directed. A Public Space Protection Order applies.
